Travel and Tourism - United Arab Emirates
Dec 28, 2012 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven states (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain) representing one of the most important economic and political players in the Middle East. The UAE is one of the most liberal countries in the Gulf, with a high level of tolerance for other cultures and beliefs. With a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita (US$55,520 in 2011) comparable to developed Western economies, most UAE residents enjoy a high standard of living. In an attempt to diversify their economies and lower dependence on oil, some UAE states (Dubai in particular, followed by Abu Dhabi) have turned to tourism.
Each of the seven states in the federation maintains independence in their internal affairs. The UAE is governed by a Supreme Council of Rulers, which includes the seven emirs. The Council appoints the prime minister and the cabinet. Abu Dhabi is the wealthiest emirate with the largest territory (87%) and largest share of the oil reserves (90%). It is also the most influential state in the federation and its ruler is the president of UAE.
