Harper Government Helps to Kick-Start Canadian Entrepreneurial Business in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, Feb 21, 2013 (Marketwire via COMTEX) --
The Honourable Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada has awarded a $525,055 contract to Notus Electronics Ltd. for its pre-qualified innovation through the Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program (CICP).
Notus Electronics Ltd.'s innovation, the Notus Net Sounder System (NNSS), is the world's first transponder wireless net sounder system. The commercial fishing industry, the scientific research community and the oil and gas industry are potential users that can benefit from this innovation.
"The fishery and oil and gas industries are integral parts of Newfoundland and Labrador's economy, and it is great to see innovative products like this one being created and marketed here in our own province," said Minister Penashue. "Our Government is committed to creating jobs and boosting economic growth here in Newfoundland and Labrador, and projects like the Notus Net Sounder System are key to driving that kind of growth."

The NNSS uses an acoustic receiver connected to an underwater microphone on the ship that communicates wirelessly to sensors on the trawl and trawl doors to provide a real sounder picture of fish passing through. Its technology allows for two-way communication between the vessel and sensor, permitting real-time adjustments that result in unprecedented target detection and identification. The NNSS can also help reduce environmental impacts in several ways: the accuracy of the system's data means reduced overfishing and that the system uses less fuel as it ensures the trawl is deployed correctly during every tow.

Launched in 2010, the Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program has already shown encouraging results, connecting Canadian companies with federal departments and agencies that have a need for innovative products and services. By selling to the federal government, businesses can demonstrate the value of their products and services, and potentially generate future sales to non-federal customers.
To build on the early success of this program, Economic Action Plan 2012 allocated an additional $95 million over three years, starting in 2013-14, and $40 million per year thereafter to make the Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program permanent. The program will include an added military procurement component.
