Nickelodeon Turns to HTML5 to Boost Mobile Gaming

When talking about the number of different uses that HTML5 can be applied to, games and entertainment are taking the front seat in the market development -- mobile applications and games in particular. Nickelodeon is the latest company that has decided that HTML5 is the way to go when loading up its brand new mobile gaming suite.

Nickelodeon believes that the sales of HTML5-compatible phones are expected to exceed one billion units by the end of the year. The company wants to make sure it is in on those sales with the launch of its new mobile gaming hub. This hub will have about 15 free games that will work on iOS and Android (News - Alert) devices. This is hardly the first company that has seen the benefits of HTML5, but it might be one of the first companies using the technology to completely benefit people who are all under the age of 18.

The games that are being offered include SpongeBob Squarepants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While users are able to access the site using tablets and smartphones, the company is looking to make the site mobile friendly by the end of this year. Nickelodeon is one of the first kids networks that is geared toward making games that are developed in HTML5. This kind of programming language allows for less of a need for external plugins such as Flash. That’s good news for kids who use Apple (News - Alert) devices, since iPhones and iPads have long been working without Flash in their devices.

This is actually the second big move to mobile for Nickelodeon. Earlier this year, the company released a dedicated application for Apple’s iPad in February. With this gaming hub, the network will be able to reach even more kids.
