Adobe ColdFusion 10 Launched, Supports HTML5, REST

Software company Adobe (NewsAlert) Systems announced Tuesday the launch of the latest iteration of its legacy development platform, ColdFusion. This newest version, ColdFusion 10, boasts support for the popular markup language HTML5 and software architecture style REST (Representational state transfer).

Adobe ColdFusion 10 is a server side technology meant to aid developers in creating more dynamic and interactive Web applications for enterprises using the Java Enterprise Edition platform. As such, the inclusion of HTML5 application development is a logical next step for the software since the standard is fast becoming popular in both the Web and mobile fronts.

“In the world of rich Internet applications, the latest HTML5 standards are pushing the limits of what developers can achieve on the Web,” said Tridib Roy Chowdhury, senior director of products and general manager of Web and eLearning at Adobe. “With the increase of content consumption on mobile devices and tablets, it has become critical for companies to provide a rich and consistent brand experience on mobile. Adobe is at the forefront of the HTML5 revolution, and ColdFusion 10 delivers the first server side solutions to help develop interactive HTML5 applications to deliver richer user experiences across multiple screens from desktops to tablets and smartphones. In ColdFusion 10, we’ve focused on helping enterprise Web developers improve their productivity in development, deployment and maintenance and helped them easily leverage the latest technologies of the day.”

ColdFusion 10’s HTML5 capabilities include WebSockets, a video player, geo-tagging and interactive charting.

Version 10 not only offers built-in support for HTML5, but it also helps boost performance using Tomcat integration and enhanced caching. Furthermore, ColdFusion 10 Enterprise Edition features a new hotfix installer and scheduler, allowing enterprise developers to improve productivity.

ColdFusion 10 also offers a slew of enhancements over previous iterations, like reducing complex business logic into a few lines of easily readable code. Similarly, ColdFusion 10 provides tools to condense large tasks into easily manageable projects, allowing developers to build and deploy scalable Java EE applications quickly in order to satisfy large-scale business needs.

In terms of security, ColdFusion 10 features built-in inherent functions to protect against cross-site scripting and cross-site request forgery attacks while an enhanced login mechanism and improved session cookie management help to strengthen the authentication of applications.

The technology is available in three editions: ColdFusion Enterprise Edition, a high-performance solutions geared toward delivering multiple websites and applications on one or more servers; ColdFusion 10 Standard, an easy-to-manage configuration ideal for small to midsize businesses and; ColdFusion 10 Developer Edition, a full-featured server meant for developer use only.

Also this week, Adobe announced a series of new features for its Digital Publishing Suite at the company’s annual Digital Publishing Summit.
