Just in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games to take place, starting on 27 July and ending on 12 August, Adobe (News – Alert) and the BBC have announced they will be providing viewers in the U.K. with access (with a username and password) to the Olympics app, in which locals are able to tap into 2500 hours of live coverage.
This will be the first time apps play a big part in coverage for a major sporting event. Adobe will provide the HTML5 apps, which is built with Adobe PhoneGap, for PCs, smartphones and tablets to be able to view, while BBC allows up to 24 streams of live footage and three additional network channels via the BBC iPlayer to show live coverage of the events.
The so-called BBC Olympic app is available free for both iOS (at the Apple App Store), Android (at Google Play), as well as for Blackberry smartphones and tablets (at the BlackBerry App World). Samsung (News – Alert) SmartTVs also can access the app.
The BBC Olympic app is only available to UK residents, but the same live coverage of the Games action (with on demand video streams) is offered by NBC in the U.S.; the U.S. Olympics broadcaster provides two free Adobe AIR-powered apps: NBC Olympics Live Extra and NBC Olympics. As for other countries without an official Olympic broadcaster, sports fans can visit YouTube to stream live feeds of the Olympic Games.
The apps (from both BBC and NBC) for the network’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympics are fine ways not to miss out on the action. Thanks to these two apps, other than sitting in front of a standard television and see the Games on Sky and Virgin Media (News – Alert), one now has the option to use Project Primetime (which is a unified video platform that links Adobe streaming) to watch BBC network coverage of the Summer Games via Internet-enabled apps, if not by means of social media network; no one will need to miss a single event during the 16 days of competition!
