This week at the CableLabs Summer Conference 2012, the semiconductor solutions provider for the connected home, Entropic (News
– Alert) Communications, will demonstrate its open-standards set-top box platform and home connectivity backbone solutions.
The company hopes to demonstrate the power, flexibility and performance of its set-top box in running HTML5 consumer applications over the Entropic-powered Multimedia over Coax (MoCA) home network.
The company also looks to demonstrate how high-def content can be transcoded and streamed to tablet devices over a MoCA or Wi-Fi adapter from the MoCA backbone.
High-def open standards set-top boxes (STB) are in high demand by global cable operators, since they offer high performance and allow a growing wave of consumer STB apps while offering a richer end-user experience. Entropic already powers an open STB platform that includes Android (News – Alert) devices by use of a system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution with integrated NEON technology and an ARM dual – core processor. This enables cable operators to offer video-on-demand, IP-based content and traditional broadcasting services.
Using the ARM (News
– Alert) Cortex A9 processor enables Entropic to deploy new apps and services that leverage third-party development work faster and transition all these services to the STB platform. Its experienced software design team with years of experience in open and common standard development in the digital home also helps to push these open platform solutions to the market quickly.
According to Dr. Anton Monk, VP of technology at Entropic Communications and a co-founder, the transition to IP-based systems requires an industry standard-based, flexible end-to-end platform that is also able to securely and reliably distribute the content over in-home networks. “As the only pure-play platform semiconductor company in connected home entertainment, we are fully focused on empowering cable operators to deliver, and consumers to enjoy, next-gen apps over their cable service with our SoC and MoCA silicon solutions,” Monk added.
