FirstDown PlayBook Youth App Uses HTML5 to Help Football Coaches Share Plays

Austin-based software development company Headspring recently launched a new app for smartphones and tablets called FirstDown PlayBook Youth. This app is a tool for youth league football coaches and players, developed for 1st Down Technologies, an Austin-based sports software company.

FirstDown PlayBook Youth allows users to browse formation packs filled with professionally drawn plays as well as create playbooks and develop practice and game plans. Furthermore, the app can print the coach’s playbook and player wristband sheets.

The app is HTML5 based, providing players and coaches with immediate access on a number of phone and tablet devices. Even without a data connection, real-time changes can be made, then uploaded online once Internet connectivity is re-established.

"Working with the team at 1st Down Technologies on this innovative football app has been a lot of fun," said Kevin Hurwitz, chief architect of Headspring. "By creating the program with HTML5 versus iOS, the technology is compatible on virtually all mobile and tablet devices, which allows flexibility and caters to the different platforms used by coaches and players."

Despite the flexibility afforded by using HTML5, the FirstDown PlayBook Youth app is currently only available on iOS devices, requiring iOS 5.0 or greater.

Headspring is a firm that specializes in custom application development and consulting. In August, the company was selected as the exclusive training partner for RavenDB, a popular open source document database. This premier RavenDB training course, provided by Headspring, ran from September 5-6 and was instructed by principal consultant Alonso Robles, while curriculum was developed by RavenDB creator and CEO of Hibernating Rhinos, Oren Eini.

In June, Headspring was named as one of the Austin Business Journal’s "Best Places to Work" in Central Texas. The software company ranked fourth in the Small Companies category of the 2012 list. Headspring was chosen to be among the top five Best Places to Work based on a series of voluntary employee surveys.
