Dell Wyse Hops into HTML5 RDP Market with Project Freezer

In a surprising move in the Virtual Machine (VM) world, Dell Wyse recently announced that the company was developing its own HTML5 Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), joining the ranks of virtualization software company VMware, enterprise software provider Ericom and multinational corporation Citrix Systems (News Alert).

The advent of HTML5 provides an advantage to clients since they no longer have to install anything on their devices. The HTML5 experience is accessed by visiting a website, where access is granted to a remote Windows application or desktop. As of September 2012, HTML5 is still largely underdeveloped, which is one of the reasons why competition in this space is so fierce. Everyone is vying to be the first to come out with an effective and bug-free HTML5 client.

Some of the major players in the market have already launched HTML5 clients like Ericom with its AccessNow, VMware with WSX, and Citrix, which came out with its version for Firefox and Chrome.

Dell (News Alert) Wyse’s entry into the HTML5 RDP race with Project Freezer is still under testing and development, but beta testing will begin in the near future. Estimates are that Project Freezer will be on sale by the end of the year.

Wyse, a cloud computing company providing industry-leading thin, zero and cloud PC solutions, was acquired by Dell earlier in the year in its bid to gain entry into thin cloud computing. The international IT corporation has been on a buying spree for the past year and a half, snapping up small to medium sized companies that give the company access into new technologies. Dell hopes to expand its offerings and branch out from providing computer hardware to the software, security and cloud computing market.

So far, it has bought data center networking provider Force10 Networks (NewsAlert), cloud computing company Boomi, data storage vendor Compellent, security firm SecureWorks, and the latest, cloud computing firm Wyse.
