Intermec Offers Cutting-Edge HTML5 Capable Browser

Intermec (News Alert) has now offered a new HTML-5 capable browser, which will allow for the development of OS-agnostic Web applications that can easily run on Android (NewsAlert), iOS and select Intermec rugged mobile computers. This will enhance workflow efficiency and provide the much needed flexibility to mobile workforces.

No fees or activation requirements are necessary.

Intermec is a workflow performance company which designs major data capture and information management solutions at the intersection of mobile workers, assets and customers. Companies around the world rely on Intermec technologies and solutions to drive competitive advantage, meet complex asset management needs and transform their inventory processes.

The new HTML-5 capable browser includes a true Web browser application, based on WebKit for multiple models of Intermec’s handheld computers for Windows Embedded operating systems and for Windows mobile.

The new browser additionally supports applications designed to run offline with no connection to server, online with connection to server – or a combination of the two.

Earl Thompson, Intermec’s senior vice-president of the Mobile Solutions Business Unit, said Intermec’s new HTML5-capable browser offers enterprises the flexibility to equip their mobile workers with a modern user interface and latest business logic, along with the right device for their specific working conditions and usage demands.

Earl added that offering much more than the next iteration of Web language, Intermec’s HTML5 offering extends the Web paradigm to a whole new class of future-proofed applications by allowing for them to be developed and deployed cross-platform.

Intermec’s HTML5 browser is built on state-of-the-art WebKit engines like Android and iOS for Windows Embedded Handhelds. It is preloaded free of licensing fees or license activation requirements on Intermec CS40, CN50, CN70, CN70e and CK70. It is available for free download for CK3, CK71 and CV41.

All the HTML 5 applications that run on consumer-grade tablets and smartphones can now also run without rewrites or changes on the select Intermec mobile computers.

Data can be stored locally on the device until it is synchronized with back-end server for improved workflow efficiency. This local storage facility will eliminate the time loss due to poor cellular coverage. Workflow can be made more responsive by updating transactional data quickly with minimal overhead.

In the current scenario of uncertain operating system roadmaps for future, developing new applications using HTML5 or porting applications to HLML5 provides a secure and reliable path to programmers by offering them the ability to create a single code base that has runs on all Windows Mobile, iOS and Android platforms.

David Judd, managing partner at TechLantern, said that as a developer of cutting-edge mobile and Web applications for a number of platforms, including Intermec’s, the new support of HTML5 on Intermec devices simplifies and streamlines our product development efforts, allowing them to develop for a single HTML5 environment for both consumer and rugged devices.

Eric Klein, a senior analyst covering mobile software at VDC Research, said Intermec is demonstrating a clear vision of how HTML5 will affect their market and is on the right path to leverage the disruption caused by the introduction of consumer-grade products into field mobility markets.

Their HTML5-capable browser offering provides software vendors and customers with a clear and easy path to deploy rugged mobile computers in environments that feature smartphone and tablet devices.
