Cybele Software has just announced the availability of an HTML5-based terminal emulator.
z/Scope Anywhere 7.0 is a package designed to allow system administrators of IBM (News
– Alert) mainframes and Unix/Linux servers access their systems remotely through their browsers, whether on the desktop or on mobile browsers.
The terminal requires no ActiveX or other plug-ins which makes it easy to implement behind a firewall. It works with Mozilla (News – Alert) Firefox, Google Chrome and other browsers, including mobile browsers. It is implemented exclusively in HTML5 and JavaScript. The interface is inspired by Windows 8’s sleek Metro interface.
The package supports a variety of protocol, including TN3270E, TN5250E, VT100 to VT420, and SSH. It also supports FTP, as well as more obscure protocols like Kermit, X/Y/Z/Modem and IND$FILE. A client can run multiple sessions. The package is also hardened for secure access to critical systems.
Administrators can specify both centralized and individual settings through a Web-based interface.
Users can view real-time statistics on their connections, including how many sessions are connected to a single host, as well as logs of connection activity. They can also print the terminal screen using a number of palettes intended to save ink.
Cyble released a preview version of z/Scope Anywhere 7.0 in the summer of 2012, and now it is ready for production.
HTML5 is an update of the HTML standard that drives the Web. It is being developed by the World Wide Web consortium, a not-for-profit group dedicated to open standards on the Web. Although it is only schedule for finalization in 2014, a number of websites are already implementing the features of the draft standard. HTML5 is an attempt to make Web applications behave more like desktop applications. It includes multimedia features that are similar to Adobe Flash, which is not supported on the iPhone (News – Alert).
