A consortium led by Telefonica (News
– Alert) Digital, a global business division of Telefonica, recently invested a little under $26 million in HTML5 "dynamic mobile" app platform developer, Everything.me. Previously known as DoAT, Everything.me claims to be developing a new paradigm for smartphones in the form of a dynamic app platform that adapts itself to match a user’s needs.
In other words, the platform is capable of downloading what it deems to be relevant apps locally or from the cloud, with no prompting from the user.
Obviously, Telefonica Digital agrees with Everything.me’s bold claims, as it has not only invested a large sum of money into the developer, but is also planning official integration of Everything.me into the upcoming HTML5-based Firefox OS.
Firefox OS is a mobile operating system being developed by both Telefonica and Mozilla (News – Alert) Corporation.
“We are committed to driving greater openness in mobile ecosystems which will in turn spur innovation,” Carlos Domingo, director of Product Development & Innovation at Telefonica Digital, said in a statement. “The integration of Everything.me into Firefox OS will add a rich and compelling content experience for customers.”
Domingo went on to add that Eveything.me is a “significant breakthrough in bringing the power of the Web to mobile.”
Everything.me plans to use this funding along with funding acquired from other investors — SingTel (News – Alert), Innov8, Mozilla and more — to expand its team as well as drive the platform’s development.
Recently, Telefonica signed a multiyear strategic agreement with Microsoft to create a new Global Video Platform for all video entertainment services across Telefonica’s operating businesses. Based on the Microsoft (News
– Alert) Mediaroom platform, the GVP is to deliver TV services over both managed and non-managed networks.
In October, Telefonica Digital acquired TokBox, a popular video communications platform. This acquisition builds on the company’s strategy of driving innovation within its core communications business with capabilities beyond voice and messaging to live video.
