500px has had a bit of an up and down run over the last few months. While the website has long been thought of as a nice alternative to Instagram, the company recently ran into a spate of negative press when it came out that it was a little too easy to find nude pictures in its database.
The firm also launched a bit of an offensive against Flikr, which so far hasn’t materialized in any real way when it comes to making 500px much of a competitor to the better established site.
500px hopes to take the next step toward actually being a company worth reckoning with, by launching a new app specifically designed for Chrome. This particular program will be available for use by any Windows or Apple (News
– Alert) computers running the Chrome browser.
It will obviously also work if you’re running the Chrome operating system. This includes the ability to work on the new Chromebook Pixel.
The application is free of charge and can be found easily at the Chrome Web Store. This is actually the app featured in the announcement of the Chrome Pixel, so it looks to be bringing a little bit of heft to the market with this particular application.
One of the nice things about this app is that you can browse apps using a variety of different settings, such as Popular, Fresh, and Editor’s Choice.
There’s also a social sharing function that sends and share pics you’ve uploaded to the site using Facebook (News – Alert), Twitter and Goolge+.
This app is different than a Google Chrome extension, launching inside the browser and working offline by default. 500px says that along with the new Chrome application, it is also working to update its Android (News – Alert) version.
The company says it wants to bring it up to the level of the iOS version, if not beyond.
