Hey, all you app developers out there.
If you’ve got an idea for an awesome HTML5 application and the technical know-how, Mozilla (News – Alert), which just launched the latest version of its Firefox OS simulator, could be looking to give you a Firefox OS developer device.
What do they want to give you, you ask?
OK, it’s pretty much the coolest device ever. It’s the Keon – the Spanish smartphone from Geeksphone!
Right; so actually, it’s not the coolest device ever, but it’s (potentially) free, and it’s all kinds of popular. You may recall that Geeksphone had to limit its sales to ensure it would be able to stay on top of existing orders.
It appears that not even Mozilla has been able to get its hands on too many Keons. The developer evangelist Havi Hoffman (News – Alert) has stated that the program offering app developers free Keons will run through the end of May, or until Mozilla runs through its “limited supply” of the device.
To get your mouth watering, here’s a brief description of the Keon. It’s equipped with 1Ghz Snapdragon S1 chipset, and pairs it with 512MB of RAM (News – Alert), a 3-megapixel camera, and a 3.5-inch HVGA touch display.
Tantalized? If not, it is probably because you’re aware of Geeksphone’s other, more glamorous offerings like the Geeksphone Peak which is substantially more powerful than the Keon, or the ZTE (News – Alert) Open, a device that is scheduled to hit South America and Europe later this summer.
Geeksphone is intent on keeping costs low so as to attract people from all brackets. But it wants to make a splash. Mozilla has a similar set of developer outreach tactics, and handing out phones to a selection of enthusiastic creators is a clever, and ultimately super-cheap way, for to push HTML5 apps out on the Firefox OS.
