Ludei, the HTML5 platform provider for mobile game developers, was recently given the funding it needs to move beyond gaming. Specifically, the company received $1.5 million from Kibo Ventures, Vitamina K and a handful of angel investors which will go toward expanding the Ludei JavaScript/HTML5 engineering team.
Both Kibo Ventures and Vitamina K are based in Spain. This funding round brings Ludei’s total funding to $4.5 million.
“This funding further validates our approach to HTML5 development. HTML5 has taken a lot of criticism in recent years and it’s true that on its own, it performs poorly on mobile,” said Ludei CEO Eneko Knorr in a statement. “But our team and the world-class developers using our platform are proving every day that with the right support, HTML5 is ready for primetime, and we’re positioned to take on the biggest players in the app industry.”
Of course, Ludei’s mission to move beyond game development doesn’t mean that the company is abandoning gaming — quite the opposite, in fact. For example, in March, the company enhanced its game development platform with 3D support, enabling developers to deliver WebGL 3D games to practically any mobile device.
Let’s also not forget that Ludei’s mission is to prove the viability of HTML5 standards for game developers.
Currently, more than 6,000 developers use the Ludei platform to power HTML5 apps — this includes three of the top 20 game publishers in the world, according to TechCrunch. This has to do with the fact that Ludei’s platform brings native performance and features to HTML5 apps, while also allowing developers to code once then monetize and market across multiple platforms. Ludei is also the only platform that currently supports WebGL on iOS and Android (News – Alert) devices.
So far, more than 500 iOS and Android games have been produced using the Ludei platform, including ScribbleMix, Bubble Soccer and Rhino Hero.
