Mozilla (News – Alert) has officially launched Firefox 26 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, bringing with it a slew of new features, most prominently expanded support for HTML5 and Web APIs. Other new features include Click to Play being turned on by default for all Java plug-ins, a more seamless update process on Windows and a new Home design for Android (News – Alert).

According to AndroidHeadlines, Firefox’s new, full support for HTML5 and Web APIs brings a lot more diversity and power to the browser. With this, Firefox 26 completes what was started with the release of Firefox 21, which introduced a handful of HTML5 tweaks, back in May.

Meanwhile, a new app manager allows developers to deploy and debug HTML5 webapps on Firefox OS phones, as well as the Firefox OS simulator. This should come as good news for Firefox OS users who, no doubt, are looking for new apps. It also offers a glimpse at the kind of environment Mozilla is aiming to create with the Firefox Marketplace.

For those that missed it, Mozilla Labs senior manager Bill Walker held a session at the DevCon5 HTML5 and mobile app developer conference earlier today entitled “Firefox Marketplace: Breaking the Stranglehold of App Stores” which highlighted the more open nature of the market. Indeed, the Firefox Marketplace aims to be a community of developers, reviewers, curators and consumers, as well as a suite of Web services made available to the whole Firefox ecosystem.

Mozilla’s focus on the Firefox ecosystem also shone through in some of the other new features introduced in version 26 of the browser. For example, it’s now possible to sync one’s desktop history, bookmarks and passwords to all Firefox-using devices quite easily.

Firefox for Android now also supports a broader range of smartphones and tablets, namely those running Android on Intel (News – Alert) x86 processors.
