The next generation of mobile computing devices needs to integrate multiple solutions while interacting with each other without compatibility issues, collaborating globally in a cloud environment. One way of achieving this is using a Web-based platform that anyone with an Internet connection can use. As HTML5 becomes increasingly adopted as a new standard by the WC3, more companies are creating solutions that can take advantage of this technology without the compatibility issues of the past. Foxconn, a global original design manufacturer (ODM) with a workforce of one million people, is teaming up with Mozilla (News – Alert) to build cross-platform applications using HTML 5 Web-based Firefox OS.
The new collaboration between the two organizations will provide opportunities for creating smart applications for cloud-based network sensing devices, Internet of Things (IoT) and terminal devices. This application will give developers the tools they need to optimize devices by integrating support for eight screens, the Internet and cloud.
With forecasts for the IoT ranging between 50 and over 100 billion connected devices by 2020, the opportunities for introducing innovative applications for embedded smart systems and high-speed wireless networks is very big indeed.
"Embedded sensing and IoT smart devices, plus HTML5 cross-platform Web-based OS technology, help industry players optimize hardware and software resources for integrated applications," said Foxconn iDSBG (Innovation Digital System Business Group) senior director William Liang.
According to Liang, the smart terminal devices or eight screens are made up of the handset, tablet, notebook, PC, connected TV, connected and smart TV, electronic whiteboard and outdoor digital signage. This also includes embedded smart devices, which are able to interact with the eight terminal devices including: environmental sensing/control devices and wearable devices such as smart bracelets, smartwatches, smart glasses, smart toys, smart cars, smart home appliances, robots and surveillance devices.
The challenges facing this huge potential are the defragmentation of the M2M industry and wireless operators around the world. By removing the problems associated with propriety hardware and software, the ambitious forecasts Foxconn sees for the future is achievable.
With platforms such as HTML 5 manufacturers and software developers will be able to integrate MultiTouch, WebTelephony, WebSMS, WebBluetooth, WebGL, Camera, GeoLocation, BatteryAPI, WebVibration, WebNFC, WebUSB, WebContact, FullScreen AP, and Setting AP into the products they make without compatibility issues.
