World Maker Faire 2012 Announces Hands-On Workshops, DIY Presentations, and Opportunities to Learn About How to Be a Maker

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) QUEENS, NY — (Marketwire) — 09/19/12 — World Maker Faire, at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) in Queens, N.Y., on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Sept. 30, will be brimming with hands-on workshops, how-to presentations, talks from DIY experts and industry leaders, and opportunities to learn specific making skills.

From soldering, lock picking, hacking and custom circuit board building to cooking, composting, and making upcycled clothing, World Maker Faire's packed line-up of learning opportunities ensures there is something for everyone. Highlights of the workshops, presentations, and hands-on areas include: Learn to Solder – At this year's World Maker Faire, RadioShack has partnered with MAKE magazine to host the Learn to Solder activity. The RadioShack team is excited to teach hundreds of eager attendees how to solder for the first time. Getting in touch with the Maker community has been an enlightening experience for RadioShack as a whole, allowing the company to focus on the innovative and creative needs of this smart and savvy customer. RadioShack is looking forward to what new and exciting announcements will occur at World Maker Faire.

Lockpick Village – Brought to World Maker Faire by The Open Organizer of Lockpickers (TOOOL), Lockpick Village will teach Faire goers how physical security operates and how it can be comprised. Attendees will enter as novices and leave feeling like secret agents with national security clearance.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama – In this unique part of the Faire, attendees can bring unwanted clothes where they will be transformed and upcycled into wearables of extraordinary variety. Attendees will work alongside of talented designers and silk screeners to make their new one of kind creations. On Sunday at 4:30PM there will be a fashion show in Zone C, on the Music Stage showing off some of the Favorite creations.

Young Makers Pavilion – The Pavilion, and its Education Cafe workshop and discussion area, will be the focal point of how-to's for and about Young Makers: how to teach young makers; how to integrate curriculum about making into the classroom; how to parent young makers; how to support young makers; how to fund young makers; and much more.

Arduino Pavilion – "Arduino 101" workshops will be offered four times daily at the Arduino Stage as well as many other project-based demos and how-to tips. The Arduino Team and Atmel will also have hands-on workshops in their booth.

Learn Breadboarding – A "Getting Started with Breadboarding" workshop will be offered this year to help attendees learn how to build simple electronics circuits on a solderless breadboard. Breadboarding is a key skill to learn for those just starting to experiment with electronics. The experts will show attendees how to build a simple blinky light circuit that they can take home, and provide a tiny breadboarding kit for future circuit building. This exciting workshop will be ongoing during the event at the Maker Shed Annex.

Make: Demo Stage – Back-to-back presentations on using leading maker tools, technology, and kits such as Raspberry Pi, Arduino, Netduino, and 3D printing, will be ongoing on the Make: Demo Stage, located inside the Maker Shed.

Maker Square – At the Maker Square, attendees can get first-hand instruction from the experts on topics such as composting in an urban environment (like NYC!) from GrowNYC; "Awesome Halloween Costumes for Regular Parents" from regular dad, Joel Potischman; hands-on food education with SouperKitchen; how to eat like a true locavore with Leda Meredith, author of The Locavore's Handbook: The Busy Person's Guide to Eating Local on a Budget; and much more.

New to World Maker Faire this year are Pop-Up Presentation Areas. Like an "unconference" combined with a "meet-up," Pop-Ups provide exhibiting makers and even attendees with the impromptu opportunity to share their projects in a casual, intimate, and workshop environment. Pop-Ups will focus on 3D printing, sustainability, and maker projects and technology.

In addition to the many areas of the event highlighting hands-on activities, many makers will be making projects with attendees in their booths. Here is just a sampling of the great things attendees can make with this year's makers: Learn to make a wind turbine, and test items in the turbine, with KidWind Turbines Print 3D objects at 3D Printer Village Make your own Marshmallow Shooters in the Young Makers Pavilion Create your own airplanes from all sorts of items with Brooklyn Aerodrome Lean to craft a bow and arrow with $20 Archery Design a car of the future in NYSCI Village Make your own bar of soap with Lisa Chouinard of Feto Soap And so much more…
