Twilio Announces Beta Support for WebRTC in Its Client Product

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Twilio (, the cloud communications company, announced beta support for WebRTC at their second annual TwilioCon conference. WebRTC is an open source project that enables web browsers with Real-Time Communications (RTC) capabilities via simple Javascript APIs. Twilio Client, which allows developers and enterprises to easily integrate IP communications into their Web and mobile applications. The introduction of WebRTC in Client promises to offer an improved user experience and audio quality.

"At Twilio, we love standards that move the Web forward," said Jeff Lawson, CEO and co-founder of Twilio. "We see WebRTC as a great advancement in Web communications, and are excited to let developers building on Twilio Client take advantage of this great new technology. Our developers are building the future of communications apps, so we can't wait to see what developers will build with WebRTC." Developers don't need to make any changes to their app to take advantage of new technology. When Twilio Client apps are used with a WebRTC compatible browser, such as future versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, Twilio Client will automatically take advantage of the improved audio performance of the WebRTC technology. If the browser doesn't support it, Twilio Client will still work and fall back to existing browser technologies.

Since Client's launch in 2011, incredible use cases have emerged by. Wix, the wildly popular company whose drag and drop tools have set a new standard in DIY website creation, built their own internal call center to deal with their rapidly scaling customer service needs. Other options for scaling a call center to meet their needs of exponential customer growth were prohibitively expensive and complex.

What Cheer, an Omaha, Nebraska based web design studio used Twilio Client as the backbone for Bumble, a web-based telephone for children. Because Twilio took care of the voice connectivity, What Cheer was able to focus on creating a stunningly beautiful UI that was specifically tailored for their intended audience of young children.

Earlier this year, Twilio released Twilio Client iOS and Android SDKs, allowing mobile developers to easily add voice capability to their apps.

Using the Twilio Client iOS SDK, RingDNA built an enterprise-ready iPad app that provides companies with actionable marketing and sales data that includes call tracking, intelligent call routing, CRM integration and click-to-call functionality.

"Because of Twilio's rock-solid client for iOS SDK, our developers could focus on RingDNA's core cloud marketing, sales and service features without bearing the prohibitive cost of creating the telephony API ourselves," said Howard Brown, CEO of RingDNA.

Recently, RingDNA won StartupCamp 6 at the ITEXPO Austin, 2012.
