Sheriff’s office warns of phone scamJan 18, 2013 (Danville Register & Bee – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) — The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning to residents to be aware of a reported phone scam.According to a news release from the sheriff's office, residents have reported receiving telemarketing calls from an 876 area code. The caller will then ask the victim to obtain a pre-loaded credit card sold at retail stores. Once the person has purchased the card, they are told to call back with the card number in order to get a prize. "The caller will sound very convincing and will attempt to get you to obtain a Green Dot card or some other pre-paid/pre-loaded credit card at a local retail store and call him or her back with the card number to claim your prize," according the release. Devin Taylor, crime analyst with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, said the department has determined this is a scam. Taylor said the callers can tell the people they are calling where to get Green Dot cards based on where they live. Taylor said they wanted to make people aware of the scam and urge people not to fall for any calls where payment is necessary in order to claim a prize. To report this type of phone calls, residents should call (434) 432-7931. Taylor said citizens can also send emails to [email protected], but to remember the email address is not for crime reporting or a substitute for 911. ___ (c)2013 the Danville Register & Bee (Danville, Va.)
