Toronto Hydro Named One of Canada’s Greenest Employers

TORONTO, Apr 23, 2013, 2013 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) — Utility recognized for its environmental leadership Toronto Hydro Corporation ("Toronto Hydro") is pleased to be recognized for being one of Canada's Greenest Employers for 2013. This recognition is given by Mediacorp Canada Inc.

and published in the Globe and Mail.

Mediacorp selects companies based on criteria including, the environmental initiatives they have in place, the extent to which they have reduced their environmental footprint, and how involved employees are in the programs. This year, Toronto Hydro was chosen for many of its efforts, and specifically for its Time-of-Use (TOU) portal that lets customers view their electricity consumption online and see directly the cost benefits of conservation and shifting consumption to lower-use periods. More than 120,000 customers have registered on the TOU website and now have access to their personal electricity usage on an hourly, daily, and weekly basis. The data is updated as recently as the previous day. Also available are usage alerts, which are e-mailed to customers to help them track and predict their electricity use.

In addition, Toronto Hydro has: — Reduced its total greenhouse gas emissions by 44 per cent since 2007.

— Invested approximately $19.2 million in conservation and demand management programs in 2011, achieving approximately 43 MW of savings.

— Planted more than 3,000 trees since 2004. Approximately 800 trees have been planted in the past three years.

— Recovered more than 3,500 metric tonnes of materials in 2011 (poles, transformers, cable wire and metals etc.) through its waste recovery program and earned $5.7 million through the resale of materials back into the marketplace.

— Introduced 153 new vehicles, including 10 hybrids and 2 electrics in 2011 as part of its 'greening our fleet' initiative. Since 2003 Toronto Hydro has introduced 67 'green' vehicles.
