The debate over native or HTML5 apps is dividing the mobile community. On one side, Apple and Google are dominating the appecosystem and reaping the rewards of their walled garden native approach. On the other side, service providers and device manufacturers are trying to get more than the scraps left behind by the “appopolies” of Apple and Google, and to find better ways to monetize their 4G network investments, the user experience and the development cycle. The consumer is caught inbetween, and continues to push service providers and smartphone makers to deliver the best experience possible. Developers will win out by having a platform that is easier and more cost effective to create compelling experiences on without the need to create multiple versions

Always Think like a Framework Creator
B-03
Laurent Hasson
Managing Director
The Advisory Board Company
In these days of shrinking schedules, its always tempting to rush things. But if i asked you to drive from Toronto to NY in 5h instead of 10h, youd think i were crazy. Well, most developers do exactly that over and over again: they cut corners early and often and write code that calcifies quickly. In this session, ill make the case that its always better, and often not that much harder, to write your software as if it were a framework, rather than a monolithic app with hardcoded features. Ill take you through the example of building an effect for AliceJS using a 3D cube as a centerpiece. We will start with a hardcoded CSS version, and slowly clean it up and turn it into a neatly packaged and reusable piece of functionality with a simple interface. In the process, well explore some advanced CSS3 capabilities, and the fact that you can do a lot of CSS directly through JavaScript.

How Fast Is Your Web Site?…And What are You Going to do About It?
B-04
Dave Methvin
President
jQuery Foundation
Most web sites combine HTML, JavaScript, and CSS from a dozen or more sources. Usually, no one responsible for the site really knows how all the pieces fit together. That makes it all too easy for problems to creep in that can turn a site into a performance swamp users want to avoid. This talk will show you how to: Justify the investment in performance; Implement best practices; Measure performance using browser tools; Find and fix bottlenecks.

Using advanced techniques, we will be constructing engaging CSS animations with very little to no jQuery. Through the creation of scalable graphics we will emphasize using the smallest amount of code for maximum impact and show when it is appropriate to use transitions versus animations and even how to combine them. We will look at current support for techniques across browsers, and spacial depth with foreground, middleground, and background. We will also be discussing the use of storyboarding to work out ideas to cut down on editing time and the composition of a nuanced character, even if the character is a concept.

Customer Enrollment using Mobile Web and Mobile Imaging
MD-05
Michael Strange
Chief Technology Officer
Mitek Systems
Smartphone and tablet adoption continues to accelerate. Mobile web utility is expanding. Mobile imaging is a huge trend, driving consumer adoption through the convenience of “just snapping a picture”. As a result, many devices carried in purses and pockets have mobile web capabilities, and cameras. The intersection, and the opportunity for convenient solutions, is compelling.Regarding mobile imaging, the primary case that many think of is Mobile Deposit – taking a picture of a check to deposit it. The ease of use is driving the technology into new areas including document management, bill payment, receipt processing, customer service, healthcare, and many other areas. In this session, we will explore the intersection of mobile imaging trends and the current state of mobile web technology. In particular, we will outline a technical architecture, best practices and implementation suggestions to streamline customer enrollment using mobile web. The opportunity to target and onboard new customers quickly and easily is a valuable use case, and a compelling example of the intersection of mobile web and mobile imaging.

Persona is a beautiful system for signing into websites without passwords. Developed by Mozilla, it is secure and simple both for developers and for users. Persona works today on all modern browsers for anyone with an email address. In this presentation, we will see how websites and identity providers alike can get the most out of Persona. First, we will ask why and how to incorporate Persona into your website, and see how enterprises can seamlessly incorporate Persona with existing authentication systems like LDAP. Then we will take a deeper look at this decentralized protocol, and learn how to write our own identity provider for use with Persona, taking control over the authentication methods used 2FA, pin codes, etc.. Finally, we will explore some recipes that platform engineers can use to embed Persona in their native code, giving a more integrated and secure experience on mobile and desktop devices.
Enterprise Apps, from Idea to Market
B-07
Jonathan Baker
Director, Developer Relations
SAP, Inc.
Apps have captured the throne. They are the future of not only how we play, but how we work. To take advantage of this confluence, there are several strategic moves developers must make as they set out to create a beautiful app, which then, in a perfect world, transforms into a business. The enterprise is in dire need of savvy app developers. I’ll discuss how one can explore that territory. I’ll also discuss technical issues: how to implement an API layer to facilitate the flow of data into or out of your application or solution; how to manage and deliver the data, how to find and connect to the enterprises systems, databases and other services that you need; and last but not least, how to bring your beautiful app to market, from testing to monetizing.
